January 2011 FKH BIRD COUNT

Allegawaho Memorial Heritage Park
Saturday, January 8, 2011

CONDITIONS: Began walk at 8:16 a.m. and concluded the walk at 9:50 a.m. Approximately 5 mph out of the north, sunny skies with excellent visibility and a temperature of 19 degrees at onset; sunny skies, 22 degrees, and approximately 7 mph wind out of the north at the end of the walk.

COURSE: We began our walk at the Allegawaho Memorial Heritage Park southeast trailhead of the Flint Hills Nature Trail walking the trail to the northeast and ended the walk at the vicinity of the Big John Creek Bridge.

   BIRD LIST:

American Robin – 344
Black Capped Chickadee – 7
Bluejay - 4
Cardinal – 17
Crow – 10
Downy Woodpecker - 4

Eastern Blue Bird – 1
Harris Sparrow - 60
Northern Flicker – 4
Red-Bellied Woodpecker - 4
Starling – 7
White Breasted Nuthatch – 2

TOTALS: 12 avian species with a total of 464 individual birds observed.

CRITTERS:  White Tail Deer– 5 on the Nature Trail



February 2011 FKH BIRD COUNT

Allegawaho Memorial Heritage Park
Saturday, February 12, 2011

CONDITIONS: Began walk at 8:10 a.m. and concluded walk at 10:54 a.m.  It was sunny with great visibility, very little wind and a temperature of 20 degrees at onset.  Skies were still sunny, the wind was out of the south at approximately 10 mph, and temperature was 41 degrees at the end of the walk.

COURSE: We began our walk at the southwest entrance to the Kanza Heritage Trail walking the streamland area for the first half of the walk, then to the upland prairie ending the walk ending the walk where we began.

   BIRD LIST:

American Robin – 50
Barred Owl - 2
Black-capped Chickadee - 3
Brown Creeper - 3
Canada Geese – 24
Cardinal – 6
Crow – 10

Eastern Bluebird – 9
 Junco – 2
 Northern Flicker - 8
 Red Bellied Woodpecker 3
 Starlings - 4
 White-breasted Nuthatch – 7
 Woodpecker (sp.) – 2 (dull in appearance)

TOTALS: 14 avian species with a total of 133 individual birds observed.



 

March 2011 FKH BIRD COUNT

CONDITIONS: Began walk at 8:15 a.m. and concluded the walk at 10:35 a.m. Wind at approximately 15 mph out of the north and a temperature of 38 degrees at onset; sunny skies, 50 degrees and wind at approximately 15 mph out of the north and beautiful sunny skies with thin and wispy cirrus clouds at the end of the walk.

COURSE:We began our walk at the begin our walk at the Allegawaho Memorial Heritage Park southeast trailhead of the Flint Hills Nature Trail walking the trail to the northeast and end the walk at the vicinity of the Big John Creek Bridge.

CONDITIONS: Began walk at 8:11 a.m. and concluded walk at 10:10 a.m. It was partly cloudy, wind at approximately 10-15 mph and a temperature of 36 degrees at onset. Skies were still partly cloudy, the wind was out of the south at approximately 10 mph, and temperature was 41 degrees at the end of the walk.

Began walk at 8:10 a.m. and concluded the walk at 10:06 a.m. Sunny skies, wind at approximately 15 mph out of the north and a temperature of 46 degrees at onset; sunny skies, 49 degrees, and wind at approximately 16 mph out of the north at the end of the walk.
